Christmas Goodies

I have been on call all week so Rob and I have been apart. Today Rob was off so he came to Lugoff to begin the Christmas celebrations. We met at Gma and Bubbas because mom sent me a message letting me know we were going to be baking and eating supper down there. I arrive and the whole family is there. We ordered wings and raw fries from Leos and enjoyed supper. After supper it was time for some Christmas baking. Gma had already baked the layers for her red velvet and caramel cakes but she needed to make the icing. Gma made her cream cheese icing and everyone enjoyed a lick of the bowl once she was finished...Monk also had a few spoonfuls.

While Gma was working on her cakes, mom directed Dee Dee and I on making peanut butter balls. We measured, mixed, rolled and dunked to make the perfect peanut butter balls. Monk wanted to join us too and he made a few that he enjoyed himself. Here is the finished product of mine and dee dees labor...YUMMY!!!!

.

Not only did we make peanut butter balls and enjoy some amazing cream cheese icing but we made some "trash" too. Basically we put everything in a big black trash bag and mixed it all together. Then you add some butter, worcestershire sauce and maybe a little something else?? not sure. Mix it all together, bake, and your get this......

After making all the goodies, it was time to go home because the festivities would continue tomorrow at Gma and Bubbas for our annual steak Christmas eve supper!!!!

Yum Yum!

"It's a zit with a hair in it..."

Early last week, Jill noticed that she had a small, zit-like infection on her right leg close to the shin.  Having seen a few zits, abscesses, and assorted other pustules in my day I recognized it as having the appearance of an infected hair follicle or possibly an ingrown hair (Jill has a natural propensity for getting bitten by insects so I didn't rule out the possibility).  I felt confident in my diagnosis because you don't have a beard for as long as I've had mine without having an ingrown hair or two; I don't get them with any amount of regularity but they do happen from time to time.  They're nasty, often painful things.  She'd shaved her legs not long before the infection popped up so it made sense to me that this was what she had.

As the week went on the infection got a bit bigger and by Wednesday evening there was swelling in the area as well as some discoloration to the surrounding skin.  What concerned me the most was that Jill said she could barely put pressure on her leg without considerable pain resulting.  She'd been working on a project in her office throughout the day and I attributed some of her discomfort to muscle strain.  Even so, I convinced her (for the moment) that it would pass given time to heal.  We went through our normal routine of dinner and dishes before getting comfortable to watch television before going to bed.

To say that Jill was concerned would be a vast understatement.  She began looking up information online about similar infections and tried to self-diagnose her wound by comparing what she had to images on various websites. (I tend to do the same when I encounter a symptom or wound that I don't recognize, but the hazardous part of this is that most medical sites will give you more information than you require and tend to make you more paranoid about possibilities instead of confident about prognoses.) Come to find out, a boil, abscess, and an infected hair follicle don't look that dissimilar from one another.  Having ruled out a bug bite for the most part, we were both fairly confident in what it was but the pain persisted to the point of her being uncomfortable even with her feet up in our recliner.  A warm compress didn't help, either.

Bedtime was upon us and Wifey's mind was running rampant with worry about whether or not her leg was going to rot off during the night.  I have to admit that I was concerned but didn't treat the scenario with the same sense of seriousness that she did, which was easy for me to do because it wasn't my leg that was hurting.  I deal with pain fairly well, or so I think; Jill is much more sensitive and it didn't take powers of clairvoyance to tell that she was scared, quite frankly.

As we went to lay down, she voiced her concerns.  By this point in time it was close to 11 PM.  We didn't have any sort of medication on hand that could help her and I didn't know what else to do beyond trying to drain the infection (i.e., squeeze it - it's what I've done to mine in the past).  I told her that our options were to either sleep on it and her go to her doctor the next day or that we go to the emergency room to have them look at it there.  At first she went along with the idea of waiting, but that didn't last long.  A few minutes and a phone call to Jill's parents later, we were out of bed, getting dressed and ready to go to the ER.

On the way to the hospital I made a comment to her that I'd hoped the only time I'd have to take her to the ER would be when she was about to have one of our children.  So much for that, eh?

It was a bitterly cold night as we've had some unseasonably frigid weather here recently. (Yes, below 30 degrees counts as "unseasonably frigid" for South Carolina this time of year.) Fortunately for us the ER at Orangeburg's Regional Medical Center was mostly empty.  The intake workers were swift and Jill was quickly taken to a triage area to check her vitals before being put into an examination room, wherein we both waited for a doctor to arrive.  When the nurse accompanying us to the exam room asked her to put on a gown I reacted out of previous hospital experience by asking if I needed to leave the room.  Chalk it up to me being a rookie husband, I guess.

Another nurse came in in advance of the doctor.  He took one glance at Jill's leg and said it looked like she had an abscess brewing there.  The nurse asked if she had shaved her legs recently; after confirming she had, he said the infection was probably from an infected hair follicle.  I gave Jill a look that was an emphatic "I told you so!", and she acknowledged it accordingly.  The nurse left and said the doctor would be in shortly, not that we really needed to see him at that point.  We got a bit more detailed diagnosis from the doctor - apparently they have a one hour minimum stay requirement for all ER visitors because we waited for close to 45 minutes for Wifey to receive her prescription and first dose of antibiotics.

While she was in triage, the nurses there had asked Jill to rate her pain on a scale of 1 to 10.  Like I said earlier in this post, Wifey and pain get along about as well as red and black ants at the same picnic.  As such, her response to this question was to rate her pain at a 9.  Apparently ER doctors aren't bashful about dishing out pain medication (or at least this particular one isn't) because in addition to a script for an antibiotic they gave her one for a fairly substantial amount of Percocet (as well as a few tablets to take that evening).  We both thought it was rather absurd (like dowsing a candle with a payload delivered from one of those planes intended to fight forest fires); she never took them or had the prescription for the Percocet filled.

Her concerns having been calmed, Wifey and I were discharged from the ER.  We headed back home, returning to our humble abode just after midnight.  I think we both slept well, probably more so because of the combined effects of a late night out and the stresses of the evening being lifted off the both of us.  Fast forward to just shy of a week later and the infection is clearing up nicely.  With any luck, Wifey will get to keep her leg...

there is a small geyser in our kitchen!!!

Let’s just say that the night of December 16th was an eventful one. I was preparing for a Christmas party at work and was making Oreo truffles….trust me its like heaven!!! I had finished making them and was cleaning up the mess I had made. Rob was in the living room wrapping a few more presents and being a very helpful hubby. So anyway, I was washing dishes and I was about to rinse the dishes off when I turned the spout from one side of the sink to the other and low and behold the spout came off in my hand and we had a geyser in our kitchen. I yelled for Rob and did have the brains to turn off the water. I stood there with the sink spout in my hand, water all over my back, hair, and sink area. Rob has no clue what to say or do….he was speechless. I explained what happened and that water hit the ceiling…just like in the movies!!! We both laughed and then put the spout back on the sink and tightened it very well. Needless to say the dishes did get washed and we have another memory that we can laugh about :O)

Here is a pic that kind of shows what it looked like…ok not that bad but it was a lot of water!!!

Rob always said our life would be an adventure and Im enjoying the ride!!

Home Group Christmas

Since we have been attending Cornerstone we have met some wonderful couples who share the same passion for Christ as we do. We have joined a Home Group that consists of 6 couples, some with kids and some not yet :O) Rob and I enjoy meeting with our group every Sunday and discussing the sermon and just talking about life in general. We decided to have a Chinese auction for Christmas so we all purchased a gift at $10.00 and wrapped it. We enjoyed some yummy snacks provided by each members of the group…and let me tell you these people can cook—from deer meat to awesome desserts!!!! After eating gifts were given to the kids and my goodness it was like a toy store had erupted in the living room—paper everywhere but HUGE smiles on the faces of the children. They played a game of passing the box too and each time it stopped you would open the box and a smaller on was inside…at the end the smallest box had chocolate inside for everyone!! After the kids had their gifts then it was time for the adults. No one took someone else’s gift….I guess we are just too nice. Rob chose the Clemson present that strategically had a USC shirt in it :O) and I chose a bag with a bath and body works gift card in it---I love that place. Tommy also passed around sheets for us to choose who will win what bowl game and the winner gets to pick where the home group goes out to eat. After some more talking and nibbling on goodies Rob and I headed home. It had been a long weekend and we had been on the road for the majority of the day so we were tired. Here are some pics of the kids from the home group enjoying their gifts…..

I love seeing Christmas through the eyes of a child

Brunch and a Beautiful Bride!

Today is a busy, busy day. This morning I had Christmas Brunch with the Beta Ladies. Rob and I headed to Cola and he dropped me off at 300 Senate Street for a little rubbing of the elbows with some of my favorite ladies. We enjoyed a yummy brunch that was provided and some entertainment from the owner. After Brunch, it was time for Rob and I to hit the road to the big City of Clinton NC. For at least two years now, each time we go out of town it rains. Today was no exception. Rob is a trooper though and he drove the whole way and didn’t complain. We did get to Clinton a little early so we found our hotel, Days Inn. This days inn has a chicken processing plant beside it….we were warned there may be a slight smell in the morning. Rob was STARVING so we went to McD’s and he finally got his MCRIB!!!!! Ok so not my favorite sandwich but I did take a bite so I could say that I have tasted one. Rob enjoyed it, in fact he ate two---lets keep in mind he has not eaten since 8:00am and that was a bagel. We layed around until about 3:45ish and then started to get ready for the wedding. I was very excited to go because Leigh Anne was one of my campers who became a wonderful friend. We arrived at the church and were greeted by more CLR girls….ladies is more like it since we are now college graduates and some have tied the knot. This was the first time Rob had met them and I think he was a little overwhelmed. They all looked gorgeous!!! We sat and waited for the nuptials to begin. The bridesmaids entered and then it was time to see Leigh Anne. She was stunning, beaming with joy. The whole time she was smiling and almost looked like she was bouncing with excitement. The vows were made and they were announces at Mr. and Mrs. Strickland. After the ceremony it was time for the reception. Once everyone arrived it was time to eat and DANCE!!! Rob danced with me…this was the first time we had ever danced together :O). Of course after the slow song, it was time to shake yo’ white girl booty time!!! Haha!!! Rob told me later that I can’t dance but I sure did try to. I enjoy the line dances and acting a little crazy on the dance floor. I was able to see Pam and Jessica Tart---love these two ladies and cannot wait to meet their two new little ones in May!!! WAHOOO!!! After dancing, eating cupcakes, and catching up with old friends, it was time to send the couple off on their honeymoon. The sparklers led the way to the truck…..and away they went. Rob and I headed back to Days Inn and got all snuggled in bed. The next day would be full of travel and Christmas fun with the Home Group! Enjoy the pics from the wedding……

Walk, Jill, Walk

So I decided a month ago that I was going to walk in the Jingle Bell 5k Run/Walk that is in Orangeburg. I went to the gym a few times and made sure that I could do it on the treadmill but then I slacked off. Needless to say I slacked off so much that I didn’t walk at all two weeks prior to the event. Probably not a good idea but oh well. So I go pick up my number last night and I asked the lady will there be walkers?? She said there will be speed walkers and runners, maybe a few joggers too. I was thinking “oh goodness what have I done!!!”. So I get a good nights sleep and wake up bright and early for the Walk. I get there and there are a few people there—they all are skinny and have spandex on so I know they are serious. I thought this was for fun!!! :O) So anyhow, the horn blows and we are off…..the first mile was killer…..second mile flew by…..third mile was a killer….but I made it!!!! I crossed the finish line under an hour!!! I was so proud of myself because that is the goal I set and I did it!!! We had an awards ceremony and to my surprise I actually placed---third place in my age group!!! Rob was there to support me the whole time and if he could have I am sure he would have driven beside me the whole time. I did find a new respect for runner and athletes in general. They are amazing and the dedication they have is phenomenal. After the run, Rob, aka the best hubby in the world, took me to Cracker Barrel for a champion’s breakfast. It was yummy but boy oh boy was I tired. That race took a lot out of me. It took me all day to recover and some of the next few days. I guess it goes to show that you really can do what you put your mind to.
me with my number!!! bundled up and ready to go!
Crossing the finish line with my newly made friend Hope
Yes, I did it...medal and number to prove it!!
Never give up
